How to hire product designers in the US in 2026
As of October 2026, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts median pay for web and digital interface designers at $104,000 a year. Most US design hires are at-will. California, New York and Washington require a pay range in the job ad. A $100,000 H-1B payment rule was vacated by a federal court in June 2026, so check USCIS before you sponsor anyone.
This guide is for talent acquisition leaders and design managers hiring product designers or design engineers across several US teams and states. It covers pay data, the law on job ads and offers, visas and how to evaluate designers consistently. Each figure is linked to the official page it comes from.
Which official figures fit product designers in the US?
The closest BLS occupation for product designers is web and digital interface designers. For design engineers, who also write frontend code, the BLS figure for web developers is a useful second reference.
The BLS has no occupation called product designer. It groups both roles under web developers and digital designers, and describes the design half this way:
"Digital designers develop, create, and test website or interface layout, functions, and navigation for usability."
That is close to the daily work of a product designer on one product team. It leaves out the research, strategy and design system work that senior product designers own. Treat the BLS figures as a floor for experienced hires.
How much does a product designer cost in the US in 2026?
The BLS reports a median annual wage of $104,000 for web and digital interface designers in May 2025. That is the most recent national figure on its page, which was updated in August 2026.
| BLS occupation | Median annual wage, May 2025 | Closest in-house role |
|---|---|---|
| Web and digital interface designers | $104,000 | Product designer |
| Web developers | $92,650 | Design engineer (frontend side) |
| Web developers and digital designers, combined | $99,520 | Both |
All three figures come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook. They are national medians, so half of workers in each group earn more. Pay in large tech hubs and for senior designers usually runs higher. Design engineers who write production code may compare their offer with software engineer pay. If you hire designers in many cities, set one band per level and adjust it by location.
Is demand for product designers growing in the US?
Yes, a little faster than the job market as a whole. The BLS projects 5 per cent growth for web developers and digital designers from 2025 to 2035.
The same BLS page counts 220,100 jobs in the group in 2025, with 11,300 more projected by 2035. The BLS calls that growth faster than average for all occupations. For a company hiring designers into many product teams, this means steady competition for experienced people. Internal moves between teams can fill some of the gap.
Do you have to put a salary range in a US design job ad?
In several states, yes. California, New York and Washington all require pay information in job ads, with different thresholds for which employers are covered.
| State | Employers covered | What the ad must include |
|---|---|---|
| California | 15 or more employees | A good faith pay scale, including for roles that may be filled remotely in California |
| New York | 4 or more employees | A compensation range believed accurate at the time of posting |
| Washington | 15 or more employees | A wage scale or salary range, plus a general description of benefits and other compensation |
California's Labor Commissioner says the pay transparency provisions took effect on 1 January 2023. New York's Department of Labor sets out its rules on its pay transparency page. Washington's Department of Labor and Industries explains its job posting requirements, which rule out open-ended phrases such as "and up".
A remote or multi-state posting can fall under all three laws at once. California's rule reaches remote roles that may be filled there. Other states and cities have their own rules, so list every place the role could be filled before you post. If you post in several states, the simplest approach is to publish a range in every ad.
What should a US offer letter to a product designer cover?
A US offer letter should state the salary, any equity, benefits, start date and whether employment is at-will. Employment in every US state except Montana can be at-will.
USA.gov explains the rule in one line:
"All states, except Montana, allow 'at-will' employment. This means that an employer or employee can end the employment at any time, for any reason."
The same USA.gov guidance for employers adds that the reason cannot be illegal, such as discrimination or retaliation. At-will does not apply to people with a signed contract, a union agreement or a public sector job.
At-will cuts both ways. A designer can leave a job at any time, so your new hire can often start soon after accepting. Their current employer may still make a counter-offer. Get the salary band and any equity approved before the final round, so the offer can go out within days. A clear written offer with the pay, the equity terms and the team helps a designer say yes.
Can you sponsor a product designer on an H-1B visa in 2026?
You can, but the role must count as a specialty occupation, and 2026 has brought new rules. Read the USCIS pages before you file.
USCIS says an H-1B role must require a bachelor's or higher degree in a directly related specific specialty, or its equivalent. Product design degrees vary a great deal, so check the candidate's degree against the role early. The same page sets an annual cap of 65,000 new visas, plus 20,000 for holders of a US master's degree or higher.
Two changes matter in 2026:
- Weighted selection. DHS replaced the random lottery with a weighted selection process favouring higher-skilled and higher-paid workers. The rule took effect on 27 February 2026, for the FY 2027 cap registration season.
- The $100,000 payment. A September 2025 proclamation required an extra $100,000 payment with new H-1B petitions filed from 21 September 2025. On 8 June 2026, a federal court in Massachusetts vacated the guidance implementing it. USCIS says it will comply while DHS considers next steps, and still plans to collect the payment if the order is lifted.
The H-1B rules have changed several times in a year. Check uscis.gov on the day you file, and budget for immigration counsel.
How do you run a fair design exercise in the US?
Keep any unpaid design exercise short, use a made-up brief and score every candidate against the same written rubric. With many interviewers across many teams, the rubric is what keeps the process consistent.
AIGA, which calls itself the nation's largest and oldest professional association for design, strongly discourages speculative design work. Its position on spec work is written about client pitches, not hiring. The principle carries over well:
"Requesting work for free demonstrates a lack of respect for the designer and the design process."
AIGA suggests asking designers for past work and a statement of how they would approach the problem. For hiring, that means a portfolio walkthrough first. Add an exercise only if the portfolio leaves a question open.
US anti-discrimination law covers tests too. The EEOC advises employers that tests and selection procedures should be job-related and suited to the role. A design exercise should test the skills the job needs. Use the same brief and the same rubric for every candidate for a role, whichever team or interviewer runs it.
How long does it take to hire a product designer in the US?
It depends mostly on your own process, because at-will employment lets a designer leave a job at any time. Most of the time goes on finding candidates, running interviews and getting approvals.
That puts the length of a US design hire largely in your hands. Agree on the rounds and the rubric before the first interview, and give each round a clear purpose. Book the portfolio review, exercise and team conversation close together. Make the decision soon after the last round, since strong designers often have more than one offer. Visa sponsorship is the exception, and can add months.
Can a US company use The Qualidex to hire designers?
Yes. Any employer can post a job on The Qualidex, and posting is free.
The Qualidex is a hiring platform headquartered in Stockholm. Each candidate has one application that grows with every interview, whichever company it was for. When you post a job, we show it to candidates matched on what they proved in interviews, and their CV. Next to every requirement in your ad, you see what the candidate proved and in which interview.
Your teams book and run interviews on the platform, so every interviewer's evidence lands in one place against the same requirements. Candidates, notes and stages sync to the ATS you already use. Posting a job is free. The fee is 5% of first-year salary when you hire, and there is no fee without a hire. You can also ask us about a custom monthly Enterprise plan instead. Teams that hire often can search the profiles themselves on a monthly subscription priced on hiring needs. Read how it works for employers or see pricing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the median salary for a product designer in the US?
The BLS reports a median annual wage of $104,000 for web and digital interface designers in May 2025. It has no separate category for product designers.
Do US design job ads need a salary range?
In California, New York and Washington, covered employers must include pay information in job ads. California and Washington apply the rule at 15 or more employees, New York at 4 or more.
Is the $100,000 H-1B payment still required in 2026?
A federal court vacated the guidance implementing it on 8 June 2026, and USCIS says it will comply while DHS considers next steps. Check uscis.gov before you file.
Is US employment at-will for designers?
In every state except Montana, employment can be at-will, so either side can end it for any legal reason. A signed contract or union agreement can change that.
Should a design exercise be unpaid?
A short exercise on a made-up brief is common. For anything longer, pay the candidate or run the exercise live with them.
How do you keep design interviews consistent across many interviewers?
Give every interviewer the same brief and one written rubric tied to the job's requirements. The EEOC advises that tests and selection procedures be job-related.
