How to hire product designers in Stockholm in 2026

In 2026, hiring a product designer in Stockholm takes a clear brief, a portfolio review and one short, fair design exercise. Budget from Statistics Sweden's national average of 49,300 kronor a month for designers in digital media, plus 31.42 per cent employer contributions. Expect a notice period of one to three months, and a work permit for anyone from outside the EU.

This guide is written for Stockholm founders and the people who run their hiring. It covers product designers and design engineers, the two design roles companies ask us about most. Every figure and legal point links to its source.

What is the difference between a product designer and a design engineer?

A product designer decides how a product works and looks, from research to the finished screens. A design engineer does some of that design work and also builds the interface in code.

Product designers in Stockholm usually own user research, flows, prototypes and the visual design system. A design engineer at a Stockholm startup often takes a design from Figma to production, writing the frontend code themselves. Small teams like design engineers because one person closes the gap between the mock-up and the shipped screen.

Decide which one you need before you write the job ad. If nobody on the team can build what a designer draws, a design engineer may be the better first hire. If your engineers are strong but the product is hard to use, hire a product designer.

Where do product designers in Stockholm come from?

Most product designers in Stockholm come from a design school, a digital agency or an in-house team at a larger tech company. Many have moved from graphic or interaction design into product work.

Design engineers more often come from frontend engineering. Look for frontend developers who care about interaction detail, and for designers who have taught themselves to code.

How much does a product designer cost in Stockholm in 2026?

Statistics Sweden (SCB) gives an average of 49,300 kronor a month for designers in games and digital media. This is the closest official occupation group to product designers.

That figure comes from SCB's salary search, which shows statistics produced for 2024. It is a national average for all of Sweden, before tax. SCB notes that it does not adjust for age, experience or responsibility. The same page shows an average of 42,700 kronor for women and 51,900 kronor for men in the group.

Design engineers sit closer to software developers. SCB's average for software and systems developers is 55,500 kronor a month, from the same 2024 statistics. Stockholm salaries and senior roles will usually sit above these national averages.

On top of salary, you pay employer contributions. The Swedish Tax Agency sets the full employer contribution rate at 31.42 per cent of gross salary in 2026. Add pension and insurance if you offer them, and most designers will ask.

How long are notice periods for designers in Sweden?

A designer who resigns in Sweden usually gives one to three months' notice. Plan your start date around that.

The Employment Protection Act (LAS) sets a minimum notice period of one month for both employer and employee. Longer periods in LAS apply when the employer gives notice. Collective agreements often set more. The union Unionen says notice under a collective agreement is usually one to three months when an employee resigns.

So a product designer you make an offer to in October may not start until the new year. Start the search before the design work piles up. Stay in touch between the signed offer and the first day.

Can you hire a product designer on probation in Sweden?

Yes. LAS allows probationary employment (provanställning) of up to six months, which becomes permanent unless either side ends it.

Use the probation period to check how a designer works with your engineers and customers. It cannot replace a careful hiring process. A designer who leaves after four months takes their unfinished work with them.

Can you hire a product designer from outside the EU in Stockholm?

Yes, with a work permit, and the salary must meet the Swedish Migration Agency's threshold. Citizens of EU and EEA countries need no permit.

Since 1 June 2026, most applicants must earn at least 90 per cent of the median salary in Sweden. The Migration Agency puts the current requirement at 34,470 kronor a month. The salary must also match collective agreements or what is usual in the profession.

Designers are not on the list of occupations with a lower 75 per cent threshold. A designer at a young tech company may still qualify. The Migration Agency's rule covers:

"Persons employed by certain tech or life science companies. The company must be in a start-up phase, be less than five years old and have fewer than one hundred employees."

Check the Migration Agency's page before you make an offer, because the median salary is updated. The permit adds weeks on top of any notice period.

How should you review a product designer's portfolio?

Read a portfolio for the reasoning behind the work, then talk it through with the designer. Polished screens alone tell you little about how someone thinks.

Ask the designer to walk you through one or two projects. Ask what problem they were solving, what they tried first and what they would change now. Ask what they did themselves, since most product work is done in teams. Designers who have worked under a client's confidentiality rules may show less. Let them talk you through it instead.

For a design engineer, ask for something they built as well as designed. A live product, a code sample or a short screen share of their work is enough.

Should you give a product designer a design exercise?

A short exercise can help, if it is fair. Keep it brief, use an invented problem and tell the candidate how you will judge it.

Never set a task from your own backlog. It looks like free work, and good designers will turn it down. If an exercise needs more than an evening, pay for the time or run it live with the candidate instead.

Swedish discrimination law also applies to hiring. The Equality Ombudsman says employers must work continuously on recruitment to prevent discrimination. That includes checking job ads for unjustified requirements. Give every candidate the same exercise and judge it against the same criteria.

StageWhat it should showWhat to avoid
Portfolio reviewHow the designer frames a problem and makes decisionsJudging on visual polish alone
Portfolio walkthroughWhat they did themselves, and what they learnedAsking about work they cannot share
Design exerciseHow they work on a new problem you setReal tasks from your backlog, or open-ended hours
Team conversationHow they work with engineers and foundersRepeating questions from earlier rounds

How long does it take to hire a product designer in Stockholm?

Expect several months from the job ad to the first day. The interviews are only part of it.

Add up the stages. You need time to reach candidates and run your rounds. Then comes a notice period of one to three months, and a work permit for anyone from outside the EU. The interview part is the only one you control, so keep it short. Drop any round that repeats another, and decide soon after the last one.

How The Qualidex helps you hire product designers

The Qualidex is a hiring platform for companies across the Nordics, headquartered in Stockholm. It connects job seekers with companies through a living job application.

Posting a design role on The Qualidex is free. The ad goes to designers matched on their CV and on what they proved in earlier interviews. Next to each requirement in your ad, you see what the candidate proved and in which interview. You run interviews on the platform, and candidates, notes and stages sync to your ATS.

You pay 5% of first-year salary if you make a hire through it, and nothing otherwise. Or ask us about a custom monthly Enterprise plan. You can also search profiles yourself on a monthly subscription. See pricing and how The Qualidex works for employers.

The Stockholm company Fluencify has used The Qualidex to hire before. More than 400 candidates went through our evaluation for two engineering roles, and Fluencify hired both after one meeting each. Fluencify and Gradr are now hiring product designers, and Everi Labs and Gradr are hiring design engineers. Designers can see the open roles and start their application.
