How to hire salespeople in Stockholm in 2026

In 2026, hiring a salesperson in Stockholm means planning around three clocks. Notice periods usually run one to three months. Probation lasts at most six months. A new account executive takes about six months to reach full productivity. Write the commission plan into the contract, pay a base salary that stands on its own, and watch candidates sell before you hire.

This guide is for founders and hiring managers at Stockholm companies. Every legal point and figure links to its source.

What does a salesperson do at a Stockholm startup?

At a Stockholm startup, the first salesperson usually finds customers, runs the sales conversation and closes the deal. Later hires split that work. Decide which job you need before you write the ad.

  • Go-to-market lead. An early hire who builds the sales process. They work out who to sell to, shape the pitch and close the first deals, often with the founder.
  • Account executive. Owns deals from first meeting to signed contract, and carries a quota. A quota is the sales target for a period, usually counted in revenue.
  • Customer success manager. Looks after customers once they sign. The work covers onboarding, adoption and renewals.

A founder who still closes every deal often needs the go-to-market lead first. Fluencify, a Stockholm company, has both a Go-to-Market Lead and a Customer Success Manager among the open roles on The Qualidex.

How much does a salesperson cost in Stockholm in 2026?

A business salesperson in Stockholm County earned an average of SEK 57,200 a month in 2025, according to Statistics Sweden (SCB). Sales and marketing managers in the county averaged SEK 82,300 to SEK 87,800 a month.

These figures come from Sweden's official salary structure statistics, which SCB produces for the National Mediation Office (Medlingsinstitutet). SCB reports two measures. Base pay leaves out all supplements. Monthly pay adds fixed supplements and many variable ones, as the National Mediation Office defines it.

The union Unionen publishes market pay from its own members. In 2025, key account managers and similar roles earned between SEK 40,930 and SEK 83,700 a month. Eighty per cent of that group fall inside the range. Unionen's statistics draw on about 280,000 members, counted on 31 December 2025, according to its method note.

How should you set commission and quota for a salesperson in Sweden?

Swedish law does not regulate commission, so your contract has to. Unionen states that no law regulates variable pay, and that its collective agreements give no right to it. The same page says commission is often paid on top of a fixed base salary or guaranteed salary. Pay made up entirely of commission occurs, but Unionen says it is not common.

On-target earnings (OTE) are what a salesperson earns in a year at exactly 100 per cent of quota. OTE is the base salary plus the variable pay due at target. No official Swedish source publishes a typical split between the two, so set yours from what the role controls. A go-to-market lead building a process from nothing controls less than an account executive selling a proven product.

Put these points in writing before the first day:

  • what the quota measures, and over which period;
  • how a deal counts, for example on signature or on first payment;
  • when commission is paid;
  • whether there is a cap, or a higher rate above target;
  • what happens to commission on deals that close after the person leaves.

Unionen also notes that some variable pay, including commission, counts when holiday pay is calculated. That applies whether or not you have a collective agreement. For a customer success manager, decide whether variable pay depends on renewals, on growth in existing accounts, or on neither.

How long does it take a new salesperson to ramp up?

Plan for around six months before a new account executive sells at full capacity. The Bridge Group's 2026 study of 158 B2B companies puts average ramp time at 6.2 months, which it calls the "Highest in study history". The same study found that 48% of reps were at quota, down from 51% in 2024.

The Bridge Group surveyed sales, revenue and finance leaders online in the first half of 2026. It does not say where the companies are based, so treat it as a broad B2B benchmark.

Ramp matters more in Sweden because of probation. A probation of six months can end before a new seller reaches full speed. So set milestones for each month of the ramp: meetings booked, pipeline built, first deals closed. Agree in advance what evidence would lead you to end the probation.

How long are notice periods and probation for salespeople in Sweden?

A salesperson who resigns in Sweden usually gives one to three months' notice. The Employment Protection Act (LAS) sets a minimum notice period of one month for both employer and employee. Unionen says notice under collective agreements is usually one to three months when an employee resigns. When an employer gives notice, LAS sets longer periods for long-serving staff, up to six months.

LAS also allows probationary employment (provanställning) of up to six months. If neither side ends it in time, it becomes permanent employment.

Do you need a collective agreement to hire salespeople in Sweden?

No. Verksamt.se, the authorities' guide for businesses, says: "Signing a collective agreement is voluntary." The same page adds that you must negotiate one if a trade union asks you to. Collective agreements often contain rules on salaries and other compensation, pension and accident insurance.

Experienced sellers in Sweden will ask about occupational pension and insurance. Without an agreement, explain what you offer instead, in the offer letter.

Should a Stockholm company hire salespeople who sell in Swedish or English?

Hire for the language your buyers use. If your customers run their business in Swedish, your seller needs to sell in fluent Swedish. If you sell to international teams, English may be enough.

Write the language in the job ad, and test it in the interview. Run the sales role play in the language the customer would use.

How do work permits work for salespeople from outside the EU?

Citizens of EU and EEA countries can work in Sweden without a permit. Anyone else usually needs a work permit, and since 1 June 2026 the salary rule is stricter. The Swedish Migration Agency says the salary must now be:

"at least 90 per cent of the median salary in Sweden at the time of the application."

For applications received from 16 June 2026, that means at least SEK 34,470 a month, based on a median salary of SEK 38,300. A lower level of SEK 28,725 applies to some groups. One is staff of certain tech or life science companies in a start-up phase, under five years old with fewer than one hundred employees. The salary must also be in line with collective agreements or common practice in the industry.

The Migration Agency states the requirement as a monthly salary. If much of a seller's pay is commission, set a base salary that clears the threshold on its own. Check with the agency before you make the offer.

How do you assess selling ability in an interview in Stockholm?

Watch the candidate sell. A live exercise shows how the person works, which a CV cannot.

  • Deal review. Ask for one deal they won and one they lost. Ask who the buyer was, what the buyer cared about and what they would change.
  • Discovery role play. Play a buyer at a company like your target customer, in Swedish if your buyers speak it. Score the questions they ask before they pitch.
  • Quota history. Ask what their quota was, how it was set and how much of the team hit it. A percentage alone tells you little.
  • Renewal conversation. For customer success, play a customer who is thinking of leaving.

Decide what each round tests before you start, and drop any round that repeats another. For more on where to find candidates, read how to hire as a startup.

How The Qualidex helps

The Qualidex is a hiring platform for companies across the Nordics, headquartered in Stockholm. Posting a job is free. We show your job ad to candidates matched on what they proved in interviews, and their CV. Next to every requirement in your ad, you see what the candidate proved and in which interview.

You book and run interviews on the platform, and each one adds to the candidate's profile. Candidates, notes and stages go to the ATS you use today. When you hire, the fee is 5% of first-year salary, and with no hire there is no fee. You can also ask us about a custom monthly Enterprise plan instead. You can also search the profiles yourself on a monthly subscription. See pricing and how it works for employers.
