How to hire software engineers in Stockholm

·

Hiring software engineers in Stockholm is slower and more competitive than most founders expect. The talent is here, but the best engineers already have good jobs, Swedish notice periods stretch every hire by weeks, and a long interview process loses people along the way. Here is what to plan for.

This guide is for startup founders and hiring managers. It is based on what we see at startups in Stockholm and the wider Nordics, and every legal point links to the source it comes from.

Where do software engineers in Stockholm come from?

Most engineers you will meet came through one of three places: a Swedish university, a large local tech company, or another startup.

  • Universities. KTH Royal Institute of Technology describes itself as the largest institution in Sweden for technical education and research. Stockholm University and universities in other Swedish cities add more graduates every year. New graduates are a good fit for some roles, but most early-stage startups need people who have already shipped software.
  • Large tech companies. Stockholm is home to companies such as Spotify, Klarna and Ericsson. Engineers who have worked there have seen systems at scale, and many of them eventually want something smaller.
  • Other startups. The startup scene is dense, and engineers move between companies often. Someone who has already been through one early-stage company knows what the work is like.

The city also draws engineers from the rest of Europe and further afield, which matters for the language and permit questions below.

Who are you competing with for engineers?

Mostly the large employers above, plus every other funded startup in the city. The big companies can offer pay, stability and brand. You usually cannot beat them on those, so compete on what they cannot offer: ownership of a real problem, a small team, fast decisions and a clear view of the company's direction.

Be honest about pay. Engineers in Stockholm talk to each other and know roughly what the market pays. A salary range in the job post saves everyone time, and a good specialist recruiter will tell you if yours is too low.

How long are notice periods in Sweden?

Longer than in many other countries, and this is the single biggest thing to plan around. Under the Employment Protection Act (LAS), the minimum notice period is one month. Collective agreements and employment contracts often set it longer: the union Unionen says that when an employee resigns, the notice period is usually between one and three months, depending on the agreement and how long they have been employed.

In practice, the engineer you make an offer to today may not start for a few months. Start hiring before the need is urgent, and keep in touch with a candidate between the signed offer and the first day. Their current employer may make a counter-offer.

Can you hire on a probationary period in Sweden?

Yes. LAS allows probationary employment (provanställning) of up to six months. If neither side ends it before the period runs out, it becomes permanent employment. Probation is common and candidates expect it, but it is not a replacement for a good interview. Ending a hire after three months costs you those months and a second search.

Do you need a collective agreement?

Not by law. According to verksamt.se, the government's service for businesses, signing a collective agreement is voluntary, though you must negotiate one if a trade union asks you to. Collective agreements typically cover working hours, pay, leave, dismissal, and pension and insurance.

Many engineers in Sweden are used to employers that have one, and they will ask about occupational pension and insurance. If you do not have an agreement, expect to explain what you offer instead. Clear answers on pension, insurance, holiday and parental leave make an offer easier to accept.

Is English the working language at Stockholm startups?

At most startups, yes. Many engineering teams in Stockholm work in English, especially where the team includes people from outside Sweden. That widens your pool a great deal: you can hire strong engineers who do not speak Swedish, whether they already live here or want to move.

If a role truly needs Swedish, for example because the engineer will work directly with Swedish-speaking customers, say so in the job post. If it does not, say that too.

How do work permits work for engineers from outside the EU?

Citizens of EU and EEA countries can work in Sweden without a permit. For anyone else, you usually need a work permit, and the employer normally starts the application. The Swedish Migration Agency sets out what employers need to do, including offering a high enough salary and making sure the employee is insured.

The rules changed on 1 June 2026. For most applicants the salary must now be at least 90 per cent of the median salary in Sweden, and it must also be in line with collective agreements or common practice in the profession. A lower requirement of 75 per cent applies to some groups, including people employed by certain tech or life science companies that are in a start-up phase, less than five years old and have fewer than one hundred employees. Check the Migration Agency's pages for the current figures before you make an offer, since the median salary is updated.

Plan for the permit to add time on top of the notice period, and help the candidate with the move. Relocation support, help finding somewhere to live and a clear start date make a real difference to whether someone says yes.

Why do long interview loops cost startups good engineers?

Because the engineers you most want are already employed and talking to other companies. Every extra round is another week in which they can accept a different offer, or lose interest. Long loops also cost you. Each round takes time from your own engineers, which is time they are not building.

A few things help:

  • Decide what each round is testing before you start, and drop any round that repeats another.
  • Move quickly between rounds, and give feedback promptly.
  • Have the people who will work with the candidate run the interviews, so the candidate meets the real team.
  • Make the final decision soon after the last round, and have the offer ready.

How The Qualidex helps

We built The Qualidex because the same engineers in Stockholm get interviewed again and again, for the same questions, by company after company. On The Qualidex, a candidate is interviewed once, in depth, by people who know the work. What they showed in that interview becomes a record, and that record is shared with every member company. When your role opens, you see the few engineers who fit it, and you can read what they have already shown before you meet them.

That means fewer rounds, less of your team's time spent screening, and a first conversation that starts further along. It does not shorten a notice period, but it gets you to the offer sooner.
