How to hire AI engineers in Stockholm in 2026

To hire an AI engineer in Stockholm in 2026, start early and test the work itself. Swedish notice periods usually run one to three months, so a signed offer today rarely means a start this month. Statistics Sweden puts average pay for software developers in Stockholm at SEK 59,400 a month in 2025. Work permit rules for hires from outside the EU changed on 1 June 2026.

This guide is for founders and hiring managers at Stockholm companies. It covers who to look for, what to pay, the Swedish rules that set your timeline, and how to interview for applied AI work. Every figure links to the page it came from.

What is an AI engineer, and how is the role different from an AI researcher?

An AI engineer builds AI features into a product that customers use. The work is mostly engineering: connecting models to your data, measuring whether answers are good, and keeping cost and speed under control.

Two neighbouring roles get mixed up with it. A research scientist works on new methods and models, and is often judged on papers or benchmarks. A data scientist analyses data to answer business questions, and may never ship code to production. A machine learning engineer trains, tunes and deploys models, and sits close to the AI engineer. In Stockholm job ads the titles overlap a great deal, so describe the work in the ad and let the title follow.

Most startups need the applied profile. Ask yourself one question before you write the ad. Will this person spend most weeks shipping product, or most weeks on experiments that may never ship? The answer tells you which of these people you are hiring.

Where do AI engineers in Stockholm come from?

Most AI engineers in Stockholm come from a technical university, a research programme, or a product company that has shipped AI features. Each pool brings different strengths.

  • KTH. KTH Royal Institute of Technology calls itself the largest institution in Sweden for technical education and research. It offers nearly 100 programmes and has around 17,000 students.
  • WASP and doctoral research. Sweden has a large national programme for AI research, and KTH is one of its partner universities.
  • Product companies. Engineers who have put a model in front of customers at a larger company know the hard parts. Those are evaluation, data quality and cost. Many of them want more ownership at a smaller company.
  • Software engineers who moved into AI. Strong backend engineers often become strong AI engineers. They know how to build reliable systems, and the model is one more component.

"The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is the largest individual research program in Sweden."

WASP, About us

WASP reports total funding of SEK 7.2 billion. It aims to graduate 600 PhD students, 150 of them in industry. It reports 83 international recruitments of senior faculty by May 2026. Not every PhD wants a startup job. Those who do bring rigour in measuring whether a model works, which applied teams often lack.

How much does an AI engineer cost in Stockholm in 2026?

Statistics Sweden (SCB) has no occupation code for AI engineers. The closest it publishes is software and system developers (SSYK 2512), and other IT specialists (SSYK 2519). SCB's wage statistics by region put the 2025 average monthly salary for software and system developers in Stockholm at SEK 59,400.

SCB measure, 2025, all sectorsSoftware and system developers (2512)Other IT specialists (2519)
Average monthly salary, Stockholm regionSEK 59,400SEK 62,300
Median monthly salary, all of SwedenSEK 53,500SEK 55,600
10th percentile, all of SwedenSEK 39,600SEK 40,500
90th percentile, all of SwedenSEK 72,600SEK 76,300

The national figures come from SCB's table of salary spread by occupation. Treat them as a floor for an AI engineer with shipped work. People who can build and evaluate AI features are scarce. The ones you want will compare your offer with the upper end of this range. Put a salary range in the ad. It filters out mismatches before anyone spends an afternoon on an interview.

How long are notice periods and probation for AI engineers in Sweden?

An AI engineer in Sweden usually gives one to three months' notice, and you can agree a probation of up to six months. Both come from the Employment Protection Act (LAS) and from collective agreements.

Under LAS, the minimum notice period is one month. The union Unionen says that under a collective agreement, notice is usually between one and three months when an employee resigns. Without a collective agreement, an employee who resigns has one month's notice under LAS.

LAS allows probationary employment (provanställning) of up to six months. If neither side ends it before then, it becomes permanent. Use probation as a safety net for the hire, and keep the interview as the real test.

Can you hire an AI engineer from outside the EU in 2026?

Yes, with a work permit, and the salary rules tightened on 1 June 2026. EU and EEA citizens need no permit. For everyone else, the employer starts the application with the Swedish Migration Agency.

"The employee's salary must amount to at least 90 per cent of the median salary in Sweden at the time of the application."

Swedish Migration Agency, new rules for work permits, 1 June 2026

The Migration Agency gives the current requirement as SEK 34,470 a month, based on a median salary of SEK 38,300. A lower level of 75 per cent applies to staff of certain tech or life science companies in a start-up phase. Those companies must be less than five years old and have fewer than one hundred employees. The salary must also match collective agreements or common practice in the profession.

For senior hires, consider the EU Blue Card. The Migration Agency page shows a salary threshold of SEK 53,625 a month as of 15 July 2025. The job must last at least six months, and the employer must advertise it in Sweden and the EU/EEA for at least ten days. From 1 June 2026, Blue Card permits can run for four years instead of two. Employers must now also tell the Migration Agency if a permit holder has not started work within four months.

Does the EU AI Act affect hiring an AI engineer in Stockholm?

It affects what the job involves. The European Commission says the AI Act entered into force on 1 August 2024 and became applicable on 2 August 2026. Rules for some high-risk areas apply from 2 December 2027.

A Stockholm company that sells AI features in Europe needs at least one engineer who can read these rules and test the product against them. Ask how a candidate would document what a model does, and how they would catch a harmful answer before a customer does.

How should you interview an AI engineer in Stockholm?

Test the work they would do in the first months, using a problem close to your own product. A coding puzzle tells you little about whether someone can make an AI feature reliable.

  • Evaluation first. Give a small feature and some example outputs. Ask how they would measure whether it is good, and what they would do when the measure disagrees with a customer.
  • A system design round on your stack. Ask where the data comes from, where the model runs, what each call costs and what happens when it fails.
  • A conversation about something they shipped. Ask what went wrong after launch. Someone who has shipped AI features will have a specific story.

Keep the loop short. A strong AI engineer in Stockholm is likely talking to several companies, and each extra week is a chance to accept another offer. We explain why automated screening loses these people in why AI interviews don't work for hiring.

How does The Qualidex help Stockholm companies hire AI engineers?

The Qualidex is a hiring platform for companies across the Nordics, headquartered in Stockholm. Posting a job is free. We show your ad to candidates matched on what they proved in interviews, and their CV. Next to every requirement in your ad, you see what the candidate proved and in which interview.

You book and run interviews on the platform, and candidates, notes and stages sync with your ATS. When you hire, the fee is 5% of first-year salary. No hire, no fee. Or ask us about a custom monthly Enterprise plan. See pricing and how it works for employers.

Stockholm companies hire for AI work through The Qualidex today. Gradr is hiring an Applied AI Engineer, and Everi Labs a Machine Learning Research Engineer. If you are an AI engineer, see the open roles and start your application.
